Each scroll is checked both by a second Sofer and by computer at a special institute in Jerusalem to ensure that the scroll is properly written and that there are no defects. The scroll is approximately 2 ½ inches tall and 3 ¼ inches wide. It is traditionally believed that the Mezuzah scroll protects the household members both physically and spiritually.
